The Ever Ephemeral…

People say “that the internet is forever” and time after time seems that information is patently false. The only way that something becomes permanent on the internet is if you try and remove it. I can recount countless occasions where a celebrity or figure had some kind of story or picture where it presented them in a negative light and it always goes one of two ways:
They actually know how to use the internet and they can comprehend twitter has a delete button and, poof! It’s gone. Well, all “gone” as something posted on the web can be. With screenshots and the internet archive, one of the greatest human endeavors I might add, nothing truly leaves. Like memories. Then there is the other way:
If they don’t know how to use the internet, Dean Norris’s search for “Sex Gifs” on twitter comes to mind. In this situation the figure or celebrity does just about everything wrong. Making more posts, acting as if they themself didn’t make the post. Like yeah andy, a “staffer” made that post and is being “reprehended” like five years ago that wouldn’t have gotten you stripped of your title.
Beyond the point. The greater point being that whatever you don’t to stay does and whatever you want to hold on to just… doesn’t. Whether it be a picture of a creepypasta antagonist or an entire collection of films about Robert Oppenheimer and his invisible desk. But some grand stars don’t remain secret. I relish every found video, every recovered text, and every single piece of lost media found by the Lost Media Community.
A great series that probes into lost media and memories is “INTERLOPER” by Anomidea on youtube and the greater webscape. The series is a hunt for knowledge. Knowledge of what? Memories? “What was” would be a better answer. It catalogs Anomi and this hunt through the valve source engine and the games that run on it. It’s a ghost story with no ghost. Its (the source engine/Anomidea) h(a)unted. H(a)unted by what? Cones. The ghost of the source engine are Cones, or at least they were Cones, long ago. Now they are lost in the source void. But I suppose that life as that “conscientia in machina” might just be a tad better than the “caro et sanguis” that you and I are familiar with if it weren't for the problem of the internet's ephemerality. (it wouldn’t though.)
it all comes back to that ephemeral little network of binary machines that just keep ticking when no one is around. Humming and buzzing with not a care in the world. Not a clue how fragile they are.
Just like memories, the internet isn’t real. Just figments, illusions, fake… whatevers. Physical media will remain through the test of time. Hopefully.
